You’re the first speaker for your class presentation and all eyes are on you. Suddenly, your heart starts racing and your palms begin to sweat. When stressful thoughts pop up, your body sends signals to the Amygdala. This is the area in your brain that helps you process emotions. Then, the amygdala communicates your worries to the hypothalamus. The hypothalamus is responsible for releasing cortisol, or the stress hormone, throughout your body. Cortisol can cause you to experience high blood pressure, sweating, nausea, and elevated heart rate – to name a few. Understanding your anxiety symptoms is the key to conquering your anxiety. Start by writing down a list of all the ways your body reacts to anxiety. Take a moment and memorize the physical symptoms that you experience the most. The next time you are presented with one of these physical symptoms, you’ll know its anxiety! The sooner that you are able to recognize your anxiety, the easier it will be to overcome it.

Shake Your Groove ThingGet up and moving, because exercise is one of the best ways to combat anxiety! Yes, it can be a pain to make time or find the motivation to exercise. For others, it’s dancing around their living room to their favorite song. Whatever you choose, make sure that it sparks happiness inside you.

Exercising is a form of adult recess, it is one of the few times of the day where we put aside our worries. Furthermore, the physical symptoms of anxiety and exercise are practically the same. Repeat this step until you feel your anxiety melting away. Just like exercising, breathing reduces anxiety, because it distracts you from overwhelming thoughts. Some people feel uncomfortable focusing on their breath, so count! Whether it be counting the number of cars passing by or the number of tiles on the floor, counting is a great distraction technique that helps reduce anxiety.
