Why Fall is A Pretty Good Season

By Rene Santana on September 16, 2019

Fall is a transitional season, as with spring. But unlike spring, food takes center stage during the fall season. Temperatures drop, vegetations take a break, and everyone is back to their regular schedules. Here some food items I cherish every time fall comes around. I know stores have their Christmas stuff on sale now, but never ever that stop you from enjoying the staples of fall.

Butternut squash

This soup is the best thing to happen to soup. The creamy and savory taste it brings is second to none. It may look all plain and yellow, but the warming sensation each spoonful brings makes you realize that fall isn’t just this grey sad season. It’s an oddly sweet soup that always lights up my soul and makes me sink into the nooks of fall. You can pair it with most meals, and especially with bread. It’s an underrated dipping sauce for bread, but that’s just what I think. You can even through in some chicken or meat, veggies, but it’s honestly great just as is.

Banana bread

If you like breathing, you like banana bread. As an exaggeration, I’m not far from the truth. If you’re needing to get your friends or family to do you a favor, banana bread is the way to go. You can even befriend strangers with it. It can be store-bought or homemade. Either way, just so long as you bring it to a meeting, get-together, or to make amends, you can rest assure that some good will come from it. But why is it so special in the fall? Because fall is when people are going to back to work or school and things get depressing after that. So, why not turn

JoJos

Oh, goodness gracious. This one is a killer. JoJos aren’t healthy, but gee golly whiz, are they the bee’s knees or what. In high school, a friend and I would count the clock till lunchtime, and when the clock struck that sacred time, we’d race down to the grocery store and load up on JoJos. We wanted to write essay’s on their overwhelming powers and eat them while doing so. It’s just fried potato wedges. Yet, such a simple delicacy paved a golden road to momentary bliss. That fry sauce dipping helped every step of the way too. We had these in the dead of winter, but I could go for some on a chilly fall night.

Apple cider

Ever pressed apples? Apple cider tastes amazing whether you pressed them or not. You could have been the one to help bring out the press, worked on pressing the apples, or boiling the cider and serving it to your buds. But, it doesn’t matter what you did to get your cup of piping hot cider, because it’s the warm cinnamon apple smell that’ll make the memories. It belongs in the fall mainly, and for good reason. The country experience of chilly winds, ombré orchards, and smokey air are all packed into a single drink. Hot cocoa has the same impact, but apple cider just hits the spot when watching your friends compete on who can crank the apple press longest.

Shepard’s pie

This the meat and potatoes of fall and winter seasons. It’s a fairly simple dish to serve. No, for real, look. All you need is mashed potatoes, your choice of meat, frozen veggies, and gravy. Yet, a whole casserole pan of this stuff can feed you and your friends for days. It’s a comforting dish because you know you probably won’t have to make another meal for a few days and count it being fulling enough. You can even think of it as the lasagna of winter. It fills you up for those long, grinding days at work or school. You can use it as a dinner date dish, just to show that you’re not all frills but the real day and willing to make a simple meal for the harder days to come.

Bonus Round: Have you ever had chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, gravy, and corn in a bowl? If there was ever a food equivalent of the snuggie, this bowl would be it. I would eat this bowl nearly every week during my rougher days at college. It didn’t bump up my grades or anything, but it definitely gave me a comfortable place to retreat to, which I desperately needed as a music major. If there’s anything I still miss from those days, it was the bowl of peace and serenity.

You may be wondering where the pumpkin stuff is at. Well, truth be told, it’s everywhere and in everything. So if you need your pumpkin fill, I’m sure there’s a pumpkin variant of all the items I listed.
