3 Inexpensive Winter Date Ideas

By Kaitlin Hurtado on January 4, 2018

Winter seems to be the perfect time to take your significant other out on a date. You both are bound to have a lot more free time when school isn’t in session and it’s the perfect opportunity to recover from the stress that has accumulated over the past academic term. However, the idea of going on a date might leave you and your wallet with a sense of dread at the thought of spending even more money during the holiday season on top of travel expenses, spending on gifts, and the possible lack of income when you call off work to go home for the holidays.

However, winter itself brings plenty of opportunities for rather inexpensive dates and if you want, you can turn a meaningful, yet inexpensive date into a great gift to your significant other instead of spending more money on a separate gift.

Local Christmas lights/scenery

This idea can take place anywhere from your local neighborhood to local parks or marketplaces that have holiday lights or scenery up for winter. If you know a neighborhood in your area – it can be one of the most inexpensive dates as you don’t need to pay money to stroll through a neighborhood. Do be prepared and tell your date to dress warmly if you are going to be spending an extended amount of time outdoors. Pick up some hot chocolate or coffee on the way to your excursion to be properly prepared for the weather.

If you and your date aren’t much for the cold weather, you can still appreciate neighborhood holiday decorations from the comfort of your own car with the heater on full blast.

Depending on where you live, local parks or marketplaces will have holiday lights and decor up for winter for visitors to appreciate. Sometimes parks will have exclusive light shows/displays for a small fee that allows you and your date to appreciate elaborate holiday scenery at a low price.

Snow day

If you are lucky enough to be spending winter where there is enough snow to make typical snow days possible, take your date outside for a day of inexpensive snow. Just like the previous date idea, you will want to tell your significant other that you are going to be spending plenty of time outside and to dress appropriately so that they don’t show up for a date in their nicest clothes or in a lack of proper winter attire for the chillier air and constant contact with snow.

Snowball fights might seem a bit boring if it’s just the two of you, but you can consider roping other couples or friends into the snow day to make it more fun with more players. Go the extra mile if it ends up being a group date and establish elaborate forts or base camps for each couple.

If you want to keep the snow day limited to just you and your significant other, try other activities you can do out in the snow, like building your own snowmen or snow sculptures. Make it a competition to see who can make the most elaborate snowman or make it a team effort to display your creation in your front yard. If local landscape allows, you can enjoy making the most of free sledding slopes for a couple runs of fun.

After spending hours out in the cold, take your date out to eat at a local cafe or even back home for a homemade meal to relax after an active day.

Holiday night in

If spending excessive time outdoors doesn’t suit you or your significant other, consider hosting a night in full of holiday festivities. The night in can cost as much as you let it with the choices you make. If you are starting with dinner, you can plan out an elaborate home-cooked meal to start the night off or order simply order cheap takeout like pizza.

Plan out some typical holiday activities to spend the night. Try your hand at baked goods from scratch – you can use them to fuel your night of holiday festivities or save them for upcoming holiday parties. If you don’t feel like investing in baking goodies from scratch (or don’t have the proper gear for it), buy a gingerbread house kit to make with your significant other. Make it more personal by making the house like your own or designing it as if it were your future dream house in gingerbread form.

If you don’t feel like spending time actively doing something for your night in, have a holiday movie marathon. Queue up holiday movies or specific TV show episodes focused on the holidays to spend the night watching, or browse different TV channels that are bound to be playing one type of holiday special at one point. Enjoy your holiday movie marathon with some hot cocoa and your typical favorite junk food.
