It Is Officially #SwimsuitSZN

By Amanda Cohen on April 1, 2016

Spring is here and summer will be here before you know it! What do people wear in the summer? Yes, you guessed it: swimsuits!

I know that bathing suits seem to be somewhat irrelevant because they are essentially small pieces of material meant to cover the necessary parts of your body when swimming, but that little bit of material can make quite the fashion statement. Currently, all online shops are focused on Festival attire; however, I guarantee that in a few weeks you will be seeing more and more shops posting their newest swimsuits. Well, keep reading, because I am going to tell you what you should be looking for when you scroll through pages and pages of swimwear!

High-Rise Swimsuit Bottoms

High-rise style is no longer limited to just shorts, skirts, and pants. Yes, ladies, high-rise fashion has officially hit the swimsuit market and the results could not be better. I know it might seem odd at first to put on a pair of bottoms that stretch up to your belly button, but the initial strangeness is worth the trendiness. High-rise swimsuit bottoms give off a sense of both style and classiness. Hundreds of swimsuit designers are opting for the trend because, for some reason, the new approach to bottoms is either lots of fabric (high-rise) or barely any fabric (cheeky).

Since there is more material in these type of bottoms and since less skin shows, designers have made the sides of the bottoms a little more revealing to give it that “bathing suit” feel. The different bottoms that I’ve seen and love are ones that have the sides braided or have the sides cut out in some sort of abstract pattern. I recommend wearing high-rise swimsuit bottoms with strapless bikini tops or bikini tops with extremely thin straps; you do not want to feel overpowered with lots of fabric at the bottom and the top

One-Pieces (Monokinis)

I am here to declare the one-pieces are officially back in style and are cooler and more stylish than ever before. With the rise of the one-piece (also known as a monokini), people no longer think of the typical sport Speedo one-piece that you were forced to wear during swimming lessons. Now, they think of trendiness and boho-chic fashion. One-pieces are now cut, patterned, and shaped in a way that provides a monokini for all personalities and styles.

I particularly like the one-pieces that have some sort of cut-out or crocheting that makes it look more lightweight. Designers are using halter styles, strapless styles, cheeky bottoms, crochet, and various patterns to make the one-piece a trend that will hopefully be here to stay for a long time. After reading the rest of the tips, I encourage everyone to look on just about any website they can think of because I guarantee you will be able to find at least one monokini that is a must-have for the upcoming summer.

Cheeky Swimsuit Bottoms

We went from swimsuit bottoms that cover a good portion of your body to bottoms that are meant to show off every little curve. Cheeky swimsuit bottoms are the only type of bottoms I saw during spring break, and I guarantee everyone will be wearing them this upcoming summer. When people hear the word “cheeky” they worry that the bottoms will look like a silly attempt of lingerie, but I promise that is not the case. Cheeky bottoms are meant to show off the best aspects of your lower appendages. The way in which they are made are usually in a boyfriend-short fashion, which shapes your thighs and bottom in an extremely flattering manner.

Since cheeky bottoms leave very little to the imagination, I recommend wearing a top that is not strapless. I would go for a top that has either thick straps or a high-neckline (which I will talk more about below). Have fun with your outfit and buy bottoms that are patterned or brightly colored; if you are going to show off your skin, you might as well have the little fabric on your body make a statement.

High-Neckline Swimsuit Tops

I know what everyone is thinking, why would you wear a high-neckline when you are trying to tan in the sun? Well, I have the perfect answer for you … because it is fashionable! You have months to tan and one day of wearing a more abstract neckline won’t ruin your bronze. High-neckline swimsuit tops are everywhere; they are comfortable and very flattering. I know it might seem odd that cheeky bottoms are trending at the same time as high-necklines, but hey, pair them together and you have one hell of an outfit going on.

When choosing a high-neckline top, go for bright colors and patterns; I would avoid just plain black at all costs because you want to draw attention to your trendy new top. Crochet is always a fun option or even a solid cobalt blue with a cutout in the center. Or, maybe look a bit sportier and choose a top that is spandex-material with a floral pattern. Floral and bright colors are always a safe choice when buying a swimsuit. However, white-out white is also a great option as long as you pair the top with some funky bottoms (small disclaimer: white makes you look super tan)!

Criss-cross tops are almost a form of high-neckline tops, except they show a little more skin in the upper extremities. Criss-cross applesauce has left the preschool classroom and has made its way into bathing suit fashion. Crossover tops are all the rage right now because they are extremely flattering. Whether you decide on a crossover that only has one large strap or one that has a bunch of little straps (pictured below) you really cannot go wrong.
