There comes a time in every college students life, when they realize that money does not actually grow on trees. Unfortunately there are other things that need to be paid for before you can just pack up and travel the world. So what if you have the travel bug, but no money to do so? ‘Travel’ the town you live in!

In many cases, when you go to college, you’re in a completely new environment and have so much to explore. But between going to class, studying, working and actually having free time, it gets a little difficult to go, and check out the city. Making time to actually see the city you’re living in is definitely key to making a home away from home.

Here are a few tips to exploring a new city:

Research!

Before you go out anywhere, you want to know what you’re getting yourself into. Sometimes the best way to find something new and exciting is to get out and walk around. If you research one area of town or one local business, walk around after you check it out to see what else the area has to offer. There are many websites to look at that have local events or shows in your area. The key is to go out and look for them!

Find a ‘travel’ buddy!

Finding someone to do fun things with is always a bonus! Chances are someone else is feeling the travel bug too and would love to explore their new ‘home’ with you. You’re never too old to experience something new!

Get out of your comfort zone!

Comfort zones are a great place to be, but not forever! College is a time to try new things, something you never would have pictured yourself doing in high school! Sometimes, even if it seems scary the reward at the end will be completely worth it.

Ask locals/older students

Don’t be intimidated to ask those around you for advice on where to explore. They’ve lived here longer than you have and probably have a few favorite spots in the city. Who knows, they may actually turn into your ‘travel’ buddy!

Go to cultural events

College towns are always having cultural events. Campuses are melting pots of different cultures and they all have so much pride with them! They are almost always affordable, sometimes even free! This is another part of getting out of your comfort zone, you’ll never know what to expect and what could happen when you go!

Volunteer!

Volunteering is always a good thing. You’re giving back to the community you’ve just joined, as well as meeting others in the community. Spark up a conversation with someone there everyone has a story to tell and it is a great way to connect with others!

Say yes!

If you haven’t seen the movie “Yes Man” with Jim Carrey and Zooey Deschanel, stop what you’re doing (after you finish reading this) and go watch it. It is the perfect example of how saying a simple ‘yes’ to something can completely change your life. Saying yes will get you out of your comfort zone and being you so much in return!

With these ideas in mind, get out there and ‘travel’ your city. You never know what you might find! Keep these ideas in mind, when you save up some money and travel the world.
