The Best Hairstyle And Color For Your Face Shape And Skin Tone

By Natalie Roytman on January 29, 2014

Unfortunately, not every hairstyle will look good on everyone. Even though some people can pull off the craziest hairstyles, there are certain ways to cut and style your hair that will make you look your best based on the shape of your face. Some hair colors look better on certain skin tones. Here are some hair style and color tips for your face shape and skin tone for women:

1. Round Faces

If you have a rounder face, an asymmetrical haircut would look great. If you have longer hair, shorter layers in front and longer layers in back would flatter your face. Uneven lengths will highlight your face. You can even get side swept bangs which help make your face look slimmer and less round. I have a round face, so I always cut my hair into choppy layers.

2. Oval Faces

If you have an oval shaped and longer face, straight bangs across your forehead can make your face look wider. You would need to style them every day, but it doesn’t take long with a straightener. If you have long wavy or curly hair, a center part would look great as well. Oval faces look good with several different styles. If you have short hair, style your hair with layers or waves to have width.

3. Square Faces

There are many hairstyles and cuts that look great for people with square faces. Long, straight hair at one length softens your face. Adding wavy ends to your hair can help to soften your jawline.

4. Heart Faces

A bob that goes below the jawline looks great and takes away from the triangular shape to your face. If you have long hair, a deep side part with side swept bangs defines your face and makes your eyes pop. Since your face is wider at the top and pointy at the chin (like a heart), any bangs would complement your face.

5. Cool Skin Tone

Cool skin tones are light, and people with this skin tone usually have blue, gray, or green eyes. Red hair looks amazing with this skin tone.

6. Fair Skin Tone

Since you have a peachy complexion, light hair would complement your features. Blonde hair is the way to go for fair skin.

7. Medium Skin Tone

Blonde, gold, and copper hair colors are the best colors for this skin tone. You can even get darker highlights to mix in with the lighter hair.

8. Olive Skin Tone

A dark brown hair color will make your features stand out. Gold and honey highlights will look stunning mixed in with the dark hair.

9. Dark Skin Tone

Your hair and skin color should contrast, so make sure your hair isn’t too close to your skin tone because it will wash you out. Try dark colors, like espresso or mahogany.

Men’s hairstyles matter too, although you guys probably look into it way less than women do. Certain hairstyles can complement your face more than others. Here are the hairstyles you should consider getting for your face shape:

1. Triangular Faces

If you have a wide forehead and pointed chin, you can do a longer haircut with layers to add width on top.  Make sure your hairstyle makes the bottom of your face look wider and more proportional with the top.

2. Round Faces

Try an off-center part with shaggy hair to make your face look less round. The more volume your hair has, the less round your face will appear. You can also keep the sides of your hair shorter and style your hair higher at the top so your face will be balanced.

3. Heart Faces

Long hair is the way to go. A square haircut will balance your face, and bangs will get the attention off of your forehead and onto your eyes and nose.

4. Square Faces

A shorter haircut will highlight your features. A buzz cut or short hair with a side part will look great. You can keep the sides short and have the top longer.

5. Oval Faces

Lucky you. You can pull off almost any haircut because this is considered the ideal face shape for men. A square cut with even sides at the top would be a good option.
