Getting Noticed as an Artist or Writer
It has never been easy to get noticed as an artist/writer. After all, there is the phrase “starving artist” for a reason.
In order to get yourself noticed, you must become an extrovert. And a charming one at that.
No wealthy publisher or gallery owner has ever walked by a random house and gone “My genius artist sense is tingling! I must find them and make them famous and wealthy!”. That is never going to happen. Remember, you have to go to your patrons, don’t expect them to come to you.
That being said, there are some lovely ways to get yourself out there (and for free!).
These days, there are a lot of online arts magazines that accept work with no submission fees and will more than likely publish your work. Too good to be true? Not at all! Lots of privately run online arts magazine are starting to do this because they want people to know about you as well as their magazine. It’s mutually beneficial. Trust me.
You are also probably wondering, “but where can I find such magazines?”. Since I am a nice person, I have kindly provided a couple of links to such sites.
Murmurations Magazine. This magazine was founded here in the Midwest and is based off the idea of community. The name comes from what a flock of starlings is called- a murmuration. Pretty cool actually.
Murmurations accept art (of every kind), photography, essay, fiction, poetry, and are making plans to start featuring local bands. Murmurations is always accepting new submission. Their catch phrase is “Expose Yourself”. A little cheeky if I do say so. Murmurations currently has three issues out and is working on their fourth. They can also be found on Facebook and Twitter.
WarBing Magazine opens up a platform for upcoming artists as well. Their goal is to “bring awareness to these individuals as well as construct a beautiful, well designed publication that everyone can appreciate”. WarBing currently has two issues out (hard copies which you can purchase on their website) and they are working on putting together issue three. You can also find them on Facebook and Twitter.
The Holler Box is an independent hybrid literature magazine. Every issue is made available online and in print, in the form of a limited release handmade chapbook. The Holler Box aims for diversity and encourages literary submissions of every kind. And of course, this magazine can be found on Facebook and Twitter.
Now, hopefully these three magazines will help you at least get your foot in the door. All of the above are very personable, and really do not care if you have been published before. To quote The Holler Box, “If you’re good, we’ll publish you”. Remember, all of these publications are free to submit to and are a great way to build your resume. So why not expose yourself?
