Top 5 Christmas Traditions

By Ian Smith on December 5, 2012

Remember a year when Christmas just felt really Christmas-y, in a good way? With all of the running around on campus it’s easy to let the holiday cheer blow past you. So take a moment with friends and enjoy some of those classic Christmas past-times.

1. My personal favorite, Hot Chocolate. What more is there to say? It’s liquid chocolate, and it’s warm, what could be more comforting? Drinking hot chocolate at any other time of the year just feels over-indulgent (not that I don’t do it anyways). So grab a big green and red mug with snowmen and reindeer prancing around on it, and warm your fingers. Don’t forget the candy cane.

2. A big fuzzy Green and Red Sweater, because it’s one thing to be surrounded by tinsel and Christmas trees, but if you make yourself part of the decorations it’s hard not to smile a big, goofy, Christmas smile as you wish all of those normally dressed people a Merry Christmas. This being said, try and save the ugly x-mas sweaters for “ugly x-mas sweater parties”.

3. Of course, we can’t forget, Christmas Music. If you work in retail you might have already had your fill of “jingle bells” by this point in the year, but don’t dismay. There are plenty of classic jingles adapted by good artists to be found. There is Micheal Bublé, Lady Antebellum, or Glee to name a few new ones, but if you’ve got a friend who is handy with the guitar all the better.

4. Chestnuts roasting on the Fireplace, or just cozying up on a cold night with any of the previously mentioned traditions will surely make the winter-time a little warmer. While a fireplace is not a common amenity for dorms and apartments, Hey! we are college students, we are resourceful. It shouldn’t be too hard to find a friend with a yard and build a firepit. For the trouble at least it is a warmer option for celebrating the semesters end.

5. Spending time with Family has got to be the most traditional Christmas activity there is. In college you’ll probably be seeing less and less of your family as you go, so seeing them at least once a year is a good tradition to start. Whether you are going home, or they are coming to you, see as much of them as you can, and if not just spend your time where there is the most love. Home is where the heart is.

To achieve the maximum amount of Christmas-y-ness combine numbers 1-5 and buy a bunch of presents. This is America after all.
