5 Things to Remember When Returning Home

By Kylie Exline on November 27, 2015

When you visit home from college, it is usually for some form of break. There are the somewhat obligatory Thanksgivings, Christmases, spring breaks, and let us not forget summers. When returning home to the beloved hometown, we tend to forget we’re not necessarily in our own apartments anymore. As in, we have to abide our parents rules again. Below are five things we forget when heading back to the town we were raised in.

1.      There May be a Curfew.

We’re used to going out whenever we want, waking up when we please, and not answering to anyone. But when parents are in charge again, they may enforce regulations we may not agree with in the slightest. AKA implementing a curfew. We may not like it, but we sort of have to follow it if wanting a place to crash for our stay.

Chores.

2.      Trading in Roommates for Siblings.

You fight with them both, you love them depending on the time of the day. The difference though, one can get you in trouble with the parents more easily. If you try to sneak out, it may not be as easy as a task. On the other hand, there’s always something about being back with the bro and sis.

3.      Chores are a Thing.

We allow dishes to pile up, trash to collect dust, and laundry to cover our apartment floors. Coming home however, that won’t slide. We have to wake up way too early to walk the dog, make dinner on Monday nights, and clean the back porch. We may not want to do them, but do we really have a choice?

4.       The College Lifestyle is Not Permitted.

Like we said, partying all hours of the night isn’t really the best example for your 15 year old sister. Also, showing that you have homework can really get them to thinking you’re there for more than the frat parties. Right?

Homework.

5.      Involved in All Family Problems.

When away at school, our parents tend to not tell us everything in order to not stress us and keep us from worrying. However, when home again, we’re quickly reminded of what goes on when we’re not here. It can be fun, but it can also be a quick reminder of why we moved so far away to attend college.  8 hours away to be precise.

When going home, it can be very much needed. We just have to keep in mind that we’re not under our own roof anymore. Basically, asking permission may be weird, but definitely necessary. Plus, if staying on their good side, you may just get a weekly allowance. Or not.
