Will the University of Iowa Football Succeed?

By Alexa Vlahakis on December 4, 2014

It has been a great year to be a University of Iowa football fan. To date our current record is 7-3 as we head into our second to last game of regular season. Many fans are reeling at the thought that the University of Iowa football team could be bowl eligible this season, thanks in part to our triumph against Purdue earlier this month with a final score of 38-14. The last time the Iowa Hawkeyes football team was bowl eligible was back in 2010. The Hawkeyes became eligible for the Orange Bowl and defeated Georgia Tech, winning the University of Iowa the first BCS bowl championship.

Let’s do that again this year!

Right now, Iowa Hawkeye fans’ hopes are standing tall and strong. As we prepare for our next game of the season to be held on November 22,2014 against Wisconsin at Kinnick Stadium, we are only one game away from being tied with the vicious Badgers. Our opponents certainly have had a better track record than us, with a total record of 9-4 for the 2013 season versus the Hawkeyes with a 2013 record of 8-5. Now, this may not necessarily seem like a big deal only being one game short of being tied each year; however, it matters in the sense that our next game against the Badgers may make or break our chances at becoming bowl eligible for the 2014 season. Last season we played the Badgers on November 2, 2013 and were defeated embarrassingly 28-9. Avid Hawkeye fan Gabby Lewis, a junior at the University of Iowa, has been a Iowa Hawkeye fan for her entire life and had this to say about our chances this weekend against the Badgers, “……” (add in what she said).

The University of Iowa football team will play their final regular season game on November 28, 2014 against the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Yes, the day after Thanksgiving – better known as “Black Friday;”but, dedicated fans will surely put away their shopping money and come out to Iowa City to support the Iowa Hawkeyes in what could possibly be their final game of the season. During the 2013 season, we played the Cornhuskers on the exact same day and won 38-17 in an upset. The Cornhuskers currently have a standing of 8-2 for the 2014 season. The University of Iowa football team can conquer the Cornhuskers once again in the same type of upset as last year, and are certainly more than capable of doing so based on our current record.

The University of Iowa football team can undoubtedly defeat these mere two weaselly teams as long as we stay focused and determined. What tends to happen with the Iowa Hawkeyes, in fact most sports teams, is that they become “cocky” about their successes on the field and that “cockiness” in turn ends up being the demise of a once great team. I believe that we can demolish both of these teams and become bowl eligible with a lot of hard work and the support of the fans. Just because we are now entering the holiday season does not mean we should abandon the teams we love. What a great way to spend the Thanksgiving holiday than celebrating a Hawkeyes win and bowl eligibility. Make sure to come out and support the University of Iowa football and we will surely be as great as we were in 2010!
