It's True, Every Thing is Bigger in Texas - Including their Hearts

By Alexa Vlahakis on October 4, 2014

It seems a young man by the name of Apollos Hester has recently captured the hearts of thousand of Americans throughout the United States. “You’re going to battle, you’re going to fight, regardless of the scoreboard – you’re gonna be alright” is a highlighted section of just what this young man is made of. As it stands, it seems to be true that everything is bigger in Texas, including their hearts. Or at least the heart of this young man and the love he has for playing sports.

According to Fox News, “nearly four million people have viewed Hester’s 2-minute video as of Tuesday” and the numbers just keep on growing. You can find the link to the video at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X7ymriMhoj0 . Hester is currently enrolled as a senior at East View High School in Georgetown, Texas with a promising future as a scholarship athlete come next year. Tom York, the athletic director for the Georgetown School District stated, “From what I understand, that was not even his best speech…” and later when on to tell Fox News that Hester has posted numerous other inspirational videos on the popular video site, YouTube.

I think we can all take a cue from what Hester has been saying. Playing sports is not about just winning or earning trophy’s, it is about how you play the game, the love for a sport, and the bond you have with your teammates. That is a concept more timeless and more precious than anything that someone who has not played sports would understand. Being apart of a team brings much more to someone’s life then could be expected and being a member of a team or organization means you and your teammates will all share a common purpose or goal and yet simply – you love the game. You form bonds with your teammates and even other players on opposing teams all because you share that same love and devotion (I would know… I played volleyball for almost half of my life). What this young man has brought to light is the eternal spirit that is within every athlete. The purpose and drive to be the best and share those experiences with the ones who are fighting the same battle you are, is indescribable. Whether it be after a win and you’re cheering with your teammates knowing you all played amazing or a loss that is damaging to every athletes esteem, Apollos Hester surely has shown us the true meaning of what it means to be a star athlete. Combining the skill, stamina, poise, and determination while giving credit to everyone on his team, he is an example of what it means to be a hero in today’s society. Instead of being corrupted with thoughts of greed and envy, he shows compassion and love for everyone who plays a sport.

Hester went on to say, “If you lose the game, you continue to get each other’s backs. That’s when we realized – win or lose, we realized that we were going to be all right” according to Fox News. In other words, your teammates are your family. Or at least another family. On and off the field, teammates and even opposing teams should strive to help each other out and show true sportsmanship. Win or lose you are all playing the same game and share that same love, passion and persistence to achieve greatness. Remember that the next time you take the field or step out onto the court – you matter, your team matters, and your love for the sport and others who play matter.
