Top 5 Summer Reading List

By Kelsey Miller on July 9, 2014

When summer comes around, I tend to get more excited about the endless hours I can spend with my nose in a book, than the other fun summery things to do. This summer my goal is to read ten books, and I have the perfect low-key job to do it.

Here are a few books I have read so far this summer!

1. Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

This book is my favorite so far. I recommend it to everyone I come into contact with! The storyline is different than anything I have ever read before. One day the main character, Nick Dunne’s wife goes missing. Nick becomes the prime suspect in her disappearance and has to fight to prove his innocence. In a turn of events, that nobody could have expected, you will have to fight in order to put this one down.  Gone Girl has been adapted into a movie and will hit the big screens October 3rd.

2. The Fault In Our Stars by John Green

I jumped on the bandwagon of TFIOS lovers very late in the game. I am a HUGE believer in reading the book before seeing the movie, so when TFIOS movie came out on June 6th, I dedicated my whole day to binge reading this book. If you haven’t already heard what this story is about, I’ll fill you in. Two teenagers, Hazel and Augustus meet at cancer support group and against all odds, build a relationship and fall in love. This book (and movie) had me crying and laughing within 2 minutes of each other. It is simply one of the best books I have ever read.

3. Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed

I am a huge eBook lover. I am always renting books on my iPad and finishing them way before the due date. I have to admit; I skipped over Wild many times as I searched for a new book to read. I kick myself now, after reading it in less than 2 days (no shame…. at all). It is a story about the main character, Cheryl, and her 1,100-mile hike from the bottom of California to the tiptop of Washington. It’s a book of self-discovery and one I did not want to end. Luckily for me, it is also being adapted into a movie staring Reese Witherspoon, hitting theaters December 5th.

4. Where We Belong by Emily Giffin

I am a HUGE Emily Giffin fan. I have never read a book I did not love by her (Read Something Borrowed, and you will understand). Where We Belong was published in 2012, but I can still pick it up at any time and fall back in love with it. It is a story about a young woman named Marian Caldwell. She is a successful television producer living in New York City. Her life is perfect, until her daughter, that she gave up for adoption 18 years ago, comes knocking on her door. She is forced to face her past and figure out exactly where she belongs in this world. Emily Giffin’s newest novel is called The One & Only. I am waiting until I leave for my family road trip to start this one!

5. Lean In: Women, Work, and the Will to Lead by Sheryl Sandberg

If you’re looking to feel empowered, I definitely recommend you pick up this book. At first, I was not convinced. I totally thought this book was going to be all about how women need more power and need to ‘lean in’ a little more, which is something we hear all of the time. But after finishing it, I was compelled to tell people about it. When this happens, I know that I actually enjoyed the book. It is the story about how Sandberg got where she is today, currently she is the Chief Operating Officer of Facebook. She has good insight into getting what you want, whether you’re a woman or man.
