A Woman's Companion: High Heels

By Olivia Kaiser on April 12, 2014

A pair of high heels can be a woman’s sexiest companion, or they can be her worst enemy. When it comes to wearing high heels, there are many different factors that can affect how they make a woman look, such as her walking style, the heel height and the style of the shoe itself. When a woman knows how to walk correctly in her shoes, with her shoulders back and an air of confidence, people cannot help but to stop and look. But it can also roll the other way, where she looks like a new born calf–wobbly and awkward.

When starting out, it’s a good idea to begin with a more conservative heel that is only one to two inches high. Purchase a pair that you know you will wear later on, even after you master this height. Nude or black heels would be an excellent choice; you can wear them to church, work, or for a special event. Also, you can wear them with jeans, dresses and dress pants.

After mastering the conservative heel, you can move up to the three inch height. This isn’t stiletto yet, but it is still a pretty good height. As you work your way up the social heel ladder, it’s important to really focus on your walk. It should be heel-toe-heel-toe, not toe-heel or entire foot (the prancing gazelle look is not attractive). Your shoulders should be back, not hunched over like the witch from Snow White, and one foot should fall slightly in front of the other in the stride. This is a great shoe to wear to parties, to special events and on date night. You can wear them with really any outfit you want.

Finally, it’s stiletto time! Only true high heel lovers, models and perfect heel-walkers should strap on a pair of stilettos. Wearing a heel that is not only tall but also has a toothpick for a heel means it’s going to be difficult to walk in at first. So, instead of making a complete fool out of yourself, wear them around your house to “break them in.” In fact, that is a good idea for any new heel you purchase. Stilettos should be worn on date nights or girl’s night outs.

Aside from the different heel heights, there are also different structures. You can have an extremely thick heel to stiletto skinny. When deciding on which to buy or wear, an important thing to consider is where and how often you will wear them. Prices can get high depending on what brand you decide to purchase, so don’t go blow your last paycheck on a pair you know you’ll only wear once (unless they’re one-of-a-kind, to die for, limited edition, gotta have crazy heels–then by all means spend away!).

However, sometimes spending a little extra will save you money in the long run. Buying a cheap pair from a thrift store, or just in general less expensive stores, can often lead to broken heels, soles, straps and adornments. Usually those more expensive pairs are costly because they are built better and will last you longer, not to mention since they cost you a pretty penny you’re more likely to take better care of them.

It is also important to think about the venues you will most likely be wearing them in. If you know they will be dubbed your “going out shoes” for your college years, then they probably shouldn’t be used for your Sunday morning worship services except in extreme cases. Bars are notorious for sending high heels to their graves; with all the spilled drinks, stepped on toes and vomit, I wouldn’t recommend wearing your brand new Christian Louboutin’s. Besides, let’s be honest: by the end of the night no one is looking at your hot shoes anyway.

Some people think you should take your height into consideration. To that, I say screw it. If you’re tall, embrace it and wear those stilettos. Anyone who tells you differently is just envious they aren’t taller than 5’10″. And similarly on the other side of the spectrum, just because you are petite doesn’t mean you have to wear tall high heels; if you’re comfortable with wearing your short heels and looking up to people then by all means do your thing. Besides, chances are that you’ll still be looking up to every one and you might as well wear comfortable shoes while you do it.

Finding a great high heel, one where your foot fits just right and walking in them isn’t as painful as you thought, is exhilarating. It gives women an air of confidence that everyone can see. But there are certain things you need to consider before purchasing: work your way up, pricing, venues and structures.

High heels are not for the weak; just ask any guy who has participated in Walk a Mile in Her Shoes.
