Spring Fashion Trends 2014

By Olivia Kaiser on March 31, 2014

April showers bring May flowers, as well as a chance to upgrade your closet, style and confidence. With spring comes a variety of new fashion trends involving textures, colors, cuts and accessories. So it’s time to spring clean your closet – box up those bulky sweaters, fleece-lined leggings and boots, and trade them for lighter clothing, dresses, shorts and sandals.

Take the time to really go through your closet. Haven’t worn that green floral shirt in three years? It’s probably time for it to find a new home where it will be loved. It can be easy to become a packrat with clothing, thinking “Oh, I might wear this dress to a wedding this summer.” Or “I could wear this shirt to work,” but let’s be honest: that shirt or dress or whatever is going to continue to sit in your closet for another year untouched.

There are multiple things you can do with your unloved clothing. You can have your friends go through and pick out items they really like, or you can donate them to places like the Salvation Army or Goodwill. Another great option is taking them to a place like Plato’s Closet and getting some money for them in return.

After you clean up your closet you can fill it back up with new, trendy items that you will be excited to wear.

Keep sticking with that gym routine, ladies, because crop tops are here to stay. When wearing these bare midriffs, pair them with a high-waisted skirt, pants or shorts. You want to make sure you keep this look classy, and pairing that crop top with low-rise jeans or a skirt that hangs on the hips is going to take it down a few notches.

Another trend you should keep an eye out for is the sheer look. This season’s fashion week showed a number of outfits with peek-a-boo sheer details. While sheer details have been on the market for quite some time, they’re now a mix between “sporty” and “sweet” as noted by Elle Magazine. This look can be transformed in a variety of ways, but it’s important that you try it on before you buy it. You don’t want to be getting ready for your day or night and find the sheerness hugs and shows in all of the wrong places.

As always, pretty pastels are a big staple in this year’s spring fashion scene. This shouldn’t be surprising, because it’s generally safe to assume that pastels and springtime are simply one and the same. So find the color that best flatters your skin tone and wear it in any form you wish that best suits your personality.

Wide-leg trousers are making a comeback this spring (it’s the Circle of Life fashion style). While fashion experts swear this isn’t a look just for the tall gals, I would be wary if you run on the shorter scale. If you don’t find a pair that fit just right you could end up looking like you have no idea how to dress yourself and continually trip over your own two feet.

Become more ladylike with the tea-length skirt, where the length is between a midi and a maxi, and you’ll be sure to hit the mark this spring. Just because you wear this modest length skirt doesn’t mean you can’t modernize it – pair it with a crop-top to help offset the length and make you look taller.

For those spring days that call for a jacket, try using a collarless coat. This staple layering piece is a long, streamlined coat that doesn’t have a collar or lapel. Now, while you could always play it safe with a solid or neutral color, I suggest being bold and finding a pattern that is fun and that you love. This coat works well with dressy trousers, pencil skirts, or a body-con dress.

If pastels aren’t for you, try wearing pieces with embellished details. Pieces with beaded and bedazzled jewels will help add a touch of glam and edginess to your style. If you decide to wear a piece like this, it’s important not to let yourself over-accessorize. The embellishments will be enough in most cases.

Find pieces that are not only trendy, but ones that you will wear a year from now and that are versatile enough to wear on multiple occasions.
